OUR MISSION:
Community on the Rise prioritizes people experiencing homelessness & poverty in Birmingham, Alabama. We are committed to community empowerment through our focus on four vital tenets: Housing, Education, Healing, & Employment. We build meaningful community as we fight poverty.
Our work to honor our four part mission includes the following work:
RISE (Recovering Identity for Stability & Empowerment): We recover identity documents including birth certificates, Alabama state IDs/licenses, & social security cards.
WHOLE (Wellness & Housing Opportunity Linked to Employment): We invite survivors of homelessness in safe, free housing for up to two years while they earn an income and are embraced in a curriculum of life-skills building, growth, and healing.
Community Table: We provide weekly safe space & group compassion-based therapy because we know that healing happens in community.
Plastics Recycling: We hire our community to recycle #5 PP post-consumer plastic waste into beautiful, sustainable home decor, garden goods, and jewelry. This means survivors of homelessness are leading the way in recycling a traditionally under-recycled material in Birmingham.
#5 Plastics are made from polypropylene (PP), a sturdy, food-safe, heat-resistant material. #5 Plastics are amongst the most common household plastics, including yogurt tubs, lids, pill bottles, takeout containers, & storage bins.
We start by sorting & cleaning plastic, which includes removing labels. We then shred the plastic into tiny plastic flakes, which are poured into our heated injector and molded into new sustainable objects, including artisan jewelry, coasters, multi-use garden pots, & more.
