Community on the Rise is prioritizes people experiencing homelessness & poverty in Birmingham, Alabama. We are committed to community empowerment through our focus on four vital tenets: connecting our community to Housing, Education, Healing, & Employment. Everything we do starts with meaningful relationship and love: we are building community as we fight poverty.
Our work to honor our four part mission includes recovering identity documents like birth certificates and Alabama state IDs/licenses (read more about our RISE Program), providing weekly safe space & group compassion-based therapy, (read more about our space and Community Table here) and our social enterprise & housing program that hires survivors of homelessness to recycle #5 PP plastic waste in our onsite workshop (read more about our WHOLE Program here).
Everything we do begins with meaningful relationship-building & love.
We are listening to our community, and we believe in our community.
#5 Plastics are made from polypropylene (PP), a sturdy, food-safe, heat-resistant material. #5 Plastics are amongst the most common household plastics, including yogurt tubs, lids, pill bottles, takeout containers, & storage bins.
We start by sorting & cleaning plastic, which includes removing labels. We then shred the plastic into tiny plastic flakes, which are poured into our heated injector and molded into new sustainable objects, including artisan jewelry, coasters, multi-use garden pots, & more.
